FRAUDULENT SPAM E-MAIL CLAIMING TO BE FROM FBI DIRECTOR MUELLER

We have become aware of a bogus spam e-mail claiming to be from FBI Director Robert Mueller III. This scam appears to be a typical Nigerian scam; however, the attempt to defraud victims comes in two separate e-mails. The same e-mail address is used to deliver both phases of the spam.

The first e-mail claims to be from FBI Director Robert S. Mueller III. It advises recipients that they are the beneficiary of a large sum of money and that they can claim the money by providing an FBI Identification Record and a Certificate of Ownership. To make the message look more legitimate, information is pasted in the e-mail from the FBI.gov web site defining what an Identification Record is and how to obtain it from the Criminal Justice Information Services Division.

The second e-mail claims to be from Donna M. Uzzell, FBI Compact Council Chairman. The message informs the recipient the Certificate of Ownership is supplied, for a fee, by the country where the funds originated. It requires the recipient to respond to the e-mail for instructions on sending the money to FBI Nigeria, which then will issue the certificate.

At this point the message becomes more threatening, stating the FBI has investigative programs which can track down those who fail to provide the requested documentation. It further states failure to comply will result in charges being brought against the individual by the FBI.

THIS EMAIL IS A HOAX. DO NOT RESPOND.

ID theft reform creates real security!

If you value your privacy and your security this election season, you need to know that Congress has yet to pass simple, common sense identity theft protections that will make a real difference.

Millions of Americans have had their social security numbers stolen. Millions more have had their financial records and other sensitive information exposed. And many consumers don't even realize they've become victims because companies aren't required to tell them! In many states, identity theives can set up new accounts in our good names and just start charging!

Join me and Consumers Union in sending a message to Congress  financial privacy and identity theft protection must be a priority for everyone's security. I just sent a message and you can too at

Wal-Mart takes drug program statewide today

Wal-Mart takes drug program statewide today

By Associated Press

ORLANDO — Wal-Mart announced Thursday that it will sell more than 300 generic prescription drugs at a sharply reduced price in all of Florida starting today, nearly four months earlier than expected.

The company is already selling 291 generic medications at $4 for a month's supply at its stores, as well as Neighborhood Market and Sam's Club pharmacies, in the Tampa Bay area.

That announcement came two weeks ago, and Wal-Mart executives said at the time they would look to expand the program statewide in January, and nationwide after that.

But Wal-Mart Stores Inc. executives said customer demand and requests from Florida officials led them to expand the program throughout the state. The list of drugs has also been expanded to 314 medicines.

"If there's one thing we've learned in the past two weeks, it's that Wal-Mart can play a unique role in responding to the needs of our customers who have struggled for too long with the high costs of prescription medications," said Bill Simon, executive vice president of the professional services division. "This introduces competition to an area where there has not been enough of it."

Simon said the source of the company's prescription drugs would not change. Some are domestically produced, and some are imported from abroad. He did not name specifically where the drugs come from.

"We don't do anything different than anyone else does," Simon said.

He said that within 10 days of the Sept. 21 launch of the program in the Tampa Bay area, Wal-Mart filled 36,000 new prescriptions. He said the company hopes to expand the program beyond Florida "to as many states as possible" in the weeks ahead.

Gov. Jeb Bush challenged the company to roll out the program across the state, and Wal-Mart responded, Simon said. Bush praised Wal-Mart at the news conference, trumpeting the good the retailer is doing and downplaying the critics that demonize the company.

"This is a disruptive idea that is going to bring benefits to millions across our state. When you're big it's easy to be a target I guess," Bush said.

Consumers could save an average of 20 percent, and up to 90 percent on some prescriptions, with Wal-Mart's decision to sell the drugs — which treat conditions ranging from high-blood pressure to allergies — at such low cost.

Wal-Mart shares fell $1.11, or 2.2 percent, to $48.44 in midday trading on the New York Stock Exchange.

Fwd: [Healthcare-now] People Organizing to Heal the Healthcare Crisis

Subject: [Healthcare-now] People Organizing  to Heal the Healthcare Crisis
To: healthcare-now@lists.healthcare-now.org

September 27, 2006 --To our friends who want to heal the Healthcare Crisis:

Have you noticed?  The national single payer healthcare movement is growing in strength.

Therefore, not surprisingly, the healthcare insurance industrial complex is scurrying about trying to find new ways to hang onto their immense profits.  They've devised plans for parents to keep paying for their children's healthcare into their late twenties or thirties in several states and a plan to deliver a Medicare-type plan (for which they get a big government subsidy, thanks to the Bush administration) that will provide for full choice of doctors and, most importantly,  more dollars for themselves.

The "Massachusettization" of the debate is one of the ways the insurance companies are attempting to gain more profits. They claim that providing state by state so-called "universal" systems such as the Massachusetts plan extracting more government money and our personal money to pay insurance companies bigger bucks  -- requiring middle class working people to purchase insurance from those same insurance companies-- will provide some kind of  minimal insurance product that might be called "healthcare for all."

There are some politicians in Congress who want to see this kind of "corporate universal health insurance" partly because they are being called on to produce a healthcare plan and partly because a for-profit system doesn't jeopardize their campaign contributions from the health insurance industry and its Washington lobbyists.  Their mantra is "anything but single payer."  In other words, "keep our profits rolling in! Don't jeopardize the privatization agenda.

This callous (or perhaps misdirected) attempt at "non-partisan" universal healthcare is constructed on the backs of millions of suffering people in our country.

Here's what you can do:  Most people are not fooled by these corporations.  Healthcare-NOW is supporting the birth of a movement for a real 21st Century healthcare system in this country.  Just today, another person in yet another state called to get involved in organizing a community campaign with Healthcare-NOW for a national single payer healthcare system. You could do the same.

People are fed up with having the insurance companies and Big Pharma dictate the terms of our healthcare.

We have a new project called "the Health Insurance Hall of Shame."  And you can help.  As we began planning it, we realized that there are hundreds of ways to focus national attention on the abuses of these companies.  They fight against and have destroyed every effort to win a national non-profit healthcare system.  People need to know this.  We want to encourage lawsuits against these companies that have been committing "insurance company malpractice." Lawsuits should be filed against these companies when they deny care to desperately sick people and cancel their policies if the bill gets too large, charge ever growing premiums, deductibles and co-pays. We can develop a brief bank and a team of lawyers to take on these giants.  And we should challenge their investments in Big Tobacco and other harmful corporations – investments they profit from by using our money. Watch for our new blog on the "Hall of Shame."  And join us.   Your help is essential to this project.

We can elect a Congress that will support a truly national single payer healthcare system and reject insurance lobbyist's bribes.  We can educate and organize the public and arm ourselves and our neighbors against the parade of falsehoods and myths perpetrated by these companies. Michael Moore is looking for people to appear in his new film, people who are up against impossible odds if they don't get the medicines and treatment they must have if they are to survive "death by denial."  You can help find these people and participate in promoting the film.

You can help make national healthcare a reality by joining Healthcare-NOW; send us your stories for Michael Moore; form a Healthcare-NOW group in your own community (there are over one hundred of these groups now); send us some financial support to keep this movement rolling; get copies of our materials; call us up or send an email and we will plug you in.  Please check out the website today – right now -- www.healthcare-now.orgHit donate to join. Call: 1-800 453-1305; Write: info@healthcare-now.org,

Just be in touch. We want to hear from you! There is no way we can win this without the mass movement that is made up of you and you, and people like you.

Thank you for your support,

Marilyn Clement,

National Coordinator, Healthcare-NOW.

An appeal from Clark -  September 26, 2006
----------------------------------------------------------------

Dear "Clark Said" subscribers:

In recent days, I have focused on the plight of Matthew Shinnick, a San
Francisco man who was arrested and jailed on fraud charges after trying
to verify and cash a check he received, which turned out to be
fraudulent. All charges were dropped and Matthew was cleared of any
wrongdoing. However, he had to pay about $14,000 in legal fees to
expunge his record. All I and Matthew have asked is that Bank of America
– the bank that pressed charges – help pay for Matthew's legal fees
since it was the bank's error. So far BOA has refused. That was even
after I offered to pay half of the money.
To hear my on-air conversation with Bank of America executives, click
here:
http://www.streamaudio.com/listen/cox.asp?station=wsb_am&streamtype=archiveaudio&optin=no&filename=boa_segment1.asf

For more information on the story and to see what I am asking BOA
members to do in protest, check out my website at
http://www.clarkhoward.com.

Also, please help Matthew by forwarding this email to your friends,
family, and co-workers. Thank you for listening to my show – I truly
appreciate it.

Clark
